Tathwell Design Associates acted as the liaison between Starbucks Corporate and Tektronix. Responsibilities included as-built documentation, schematic design, review for compliance with local codes, coordination and communication with the Starbuck's Corporate design team, construction documents, permitting and construction project management for turn-over to the tenant.
Tek Cafe

Imagine a large, dated and dark cafeteria filled with a sea of tables and chairs populated by an occasional person; this was the Tek Cafe. Last remodeled in the 90's this was a tired space. With a very limited budget and lots of ideas the steering committee and I were able to determine a list of priority items and outline phases to achieve their goals. Phase 1: reconfigure the tables and chairs, new paint colors, add booth seating and soft seating pods. Already a much needed improvement!

What do a bunch of retired Tek engineers with time on their hands do? Establish a museum with equipment and technology outlining the history of Tektronix from inception of the company through today. We had the pleasure of working with the Tek veterans to make their dream a reality with a short timeline and very small budget.

Woodruff Sawyer's Portland office was tired and after 20 years needed a refresh. Furniture systems inherited from a previous tenant, a conference table rescued from a dumpster and an overall "beige" appearance to the office didn't give an overall good first impression. Our task was to modernize the office as well as create new efficiencies in the operation and flow to reflect Woodruff's corporate identity, growing workforce and to create amenities to attract new talent. We opened-up the outdated floor plan creating new conferencing and touch-down spaces as well as a large employee lounge which can double as a group gathering space. All new furniture and workstations created more efficient and flexible work spaces as well as accommodating additional staff.

The client requested that the “refresh” of their existing offices reflect their Portland clientele and not the corporate standard; an office that was “hip” and functional. The design challenge was to transform a tired, 1990’s office lay-out and and turn it into a professional, modern space within a very limited budget and tight timeline; while incorporating the Chubb corporate branding.

Marger Johnson & McCollom’s offices were locked in a time warp and when their lease was up in a century old building in downtown Portland, they were looking for a re-branding. An intellectual property law firm, they were accustomed to working with clients who were creative and had a vision. Tathwell Design Associates proposed a clean, modern space accented with colorful commissioned local artwork and nods to patent history with Edison bulbs in the reception and conference rooms (think idea!) With the white walls, abundant natural light, city views and neutral tones, the space is a blank slate – ready for the next creative patent.
Brew-house, Corporate Offices and Taproom

Responsibilities included assisting with site and building selection, brewery and tap room planning and design, exterior concept design and detailing, construction documents, landscape design and permitting.
Base Camp Brewing is the brainchild of former Klamath Basin Brewing brew-master Justin Fay. The theme of the taproom is everything related to outdoor activities in the Pacific Northwest, which was achieved by using materials and that are either recycled or earth friendly as well as sports related objects and images used in “creative” ways. The buildings incorporate raw materials, energy efficient systems along with features such as natural light, an outdoor “beer garden” (with natural gas fire pits) and native plantings. Tathwell Design Associates was the architectural lead and transformed two industrial buildings in a gritty SE Portland neighborhood into a hip Northwest centric microbrewery.
